Born and raised in the western suburbs\, Carter was into music from a young age\, but during his teens Chicago’s house scene sucked him in for good. Before long Carter became a strong presence in the city’s underground dance scene. “When I got my driver’s license at 16 my sneak ability was validated\,” he laughs. “I was a fierce bedroom jock for a long time. After you mix for the love of it for six or seven years\, you get it pretty tight and you can take it on the road.” He got by working at dance-music specialty stores like Gramaphone and gigging at parties. Later he landed regular DJ stints at Shelter\, Foxy’s\, and Smart Bar. Though he doesn’t spin much locally anymore\, when he does he attracts large crowds. Most of the time he works in Europe\, where he’s become a minor celebrity among dance-music aficionados. \n“It’s hard not to laugh on the occasions when you’ll make 20 times what you make in Chicago on a Saturday night\, but back home there are also times when you just do it for fun… So many people come up to me and say ‘Man\, I had the worst day\, My girlfriend left me\, I locked my keys in my car\, but you turned it around for two hours\, and that made me able to get up in the morning’ That’s the best thing going.” \nDerrick’s sets are rooted in house\, but he freely travels outside club tastes\, seamlessly incorporating old-school disco\, soul\, jazz and whatever catches his fancy. \nHis debut single “Love Me Right” appeared in 1987\, just after he graduated from college. Another single (“Symbols and Instruments” as Mood) appeared in 1989\, but the Chicago house scene faded soon after\, leaving Carter and other artists with few to play for except themselves. \nThanks in part to Cajmere’s and Felix Da Housecat’s respective labels (Relief\, Radikal Fear)\, Chicago house made a comeback during the mid-’90s and began to offer impressive newcomers in addition to the old guard. Carter\, recording for the Organico label\, returned with several singles\, and an album as Sound Patrol. In 1995\, he began working with a live band as the Sound Patrol Orchestra. \nSeveral mix albums have appeared\, including Cosmic Disco on MixMag and Pagan Offering on Pagan. Carter has also founded two labels (Blue Cucaracha and Classic) and remixed tracks from Chicago’s own post-rock heroes Tortoise. \n~ John Bush\, All Music Guide \nSince then pioneering\, innovative tracks and consequent critical acclaim have repeatedly marked Derrick out as once of the most important players in Dance music. \nCarter says that due to his growing notoriety his production talents have been requested by pop-oriented acts. But he prefers to remain underground. Although enthused about his own Blue Cucaracha label and a new UK-based imprint he runs called Classic\, he’s reluctant to offer much explanation of either label’s MO-other than each releases records when the mood strikes him: \n“I like to keep myself pretty invisible. You may think I’m somewhere\, but I’ve already left.”

To spark joy. To give a piece of momentary happiness. My song is my island. I want others to feel engaged the way I do l when I listen to songs I love. Alive. \nI started taking guitar lessons at 8. Hated every minute of it other than the times I learned songs that I heard on the radio. I remember my first experiences singing in church with my grandparents. It was a conservative congregation that only allowed acapella hymns. The sound of vocal harmony was absolutely chilling. I took a stab at writing when I was 12-13. I participated in talent shows\, choir performances\, musicals and plays. I started writing with a group in 2006. We wrote and recorded 2 albums. My experiences during that time really helped add fuel the fire I had for music. I continued writing throughout college. I eventually found myself in a folk pop trio in 2011. This experience inspired me to continue writing and it became clear that I found refuge in it. This was around the time the song Parachute came about. I moved to Indianapolis shortly college after to pursue other career endeavors and to focus on my music. I spent a lot of time writing about my experiences with adjusting to new phases in life and the pursuit of wholeness. In February 2013 I released my first solo EP called Parachute. I’ve spent the last 4 years developing and working on my songwriting. I spent some time teaming up with other artists and experimenting with co-writing and recording. In July 2017\, I released a new album called Sun & Shade. Its my story about searching for love and sometimes in all the wrong places. Its about breaking unhealthy cycles. Choosing Optimism over Pessimism.

The Muhlenberg County\, Kentucky-based group’s latest album\, its fifth overall\, Weight Of A Trigger\, out March 29th\, is a potent distillation of its outlaw heartache soul. \nThe dark impulses Ben sings about are simply the demons that have driven him since he was a teen. At 16\, Ben left home to play music on the streets. Since then\, he’s lived under bridges\, slept in jail cells\, sought freedom hopping freight trains\, battled addiction\, and watched many good friends die from the same rambling disease. Some states\, he remains a wanted man with active warrants. Though Ben has been aimless\, and destructive\, he’s always been prolific through exorcising his demons in song. He recorded an album of traditional music with a new group\, Chance McCoy and the Appalachian String Band\, and began touring the country. Whatever dreams he carried in his head didn’t match up with reality\, though\, and McCoy watched helplessly as his life began to slowly unravel around him on the road. \n“Every tour\, I’d come home with less money than I started\,” he reflects. “I was struggling to survive. My marriage ended in divorce. Everything was going downhill.” \nAt his lowest\, McCoy found himself teaching fiddle lessons and living on food stamps to get by as he raised his young son in a cabin so dilapidated it lacked even proper heat for the winter. Then he got an email that would change his life forever. \n“I got this note from Ketch Secor from Old Crow Medicine Show\,” he remembers. “I’d never met those guys—my only experience was getting totally destroyed by them at a festival when they played on the mainstage while I performed in a little dance tent—but he said a member had left the group and he wanted to know if I would be interested in coming to Nashville to audition for the band.” \nThree years later\, McCoy was standing onstage holding a Best Folk Album GRAMMY Award for ‘Remedy\,’ the first collection he wrote and recorded with the platinum-selling group. Though the group is a new endeavor\, the band has been surrounded by music all of their lives as their families have all been musical influences. \n“We grew up around music and kind of just picked it up ourselves. Our father’s side of the family can play and sing\, and our mother is very musically talented and trained many vocal groups. One Christmas\, we got instruments instead of presents\, and since then we have been like\, yeah\, this is what we do\,” said Bubby. \n“Back then none of us could play anything\,” added Dikembe. “We were just banging\, so we sounded like a really bad heavy metal rock group. Nine days later on March 12 the rest of the tour was canceled when the pandemic hit. On Wednesday\, September 30th\, Rateliff will livestream a performance at Colorado’s renowned Red Rocks Amphitheatre. \nThe show will feature various aspects of Rateliff’s stellar musicianship\, ranging from stripped-back moments with just his voice and acoustic guitar to a full 10-piece folk band accompaniment\, which includes a string quartet. The event will also feature opening act Kevin Morby\, who was originally scheduled to perform with Rateliff as part of his cancelled Red Rocks dates in August. Kevin Morby will perform at 8:00PM ET and Nathaniel Rateliff will perform at 8:45PM ET. \nFilmed with 9 cameras\, viewers will have unprecedented access to the musicians\, stage and iconic venue for a full-fledged virtual event while capturing a moving performance from Rateliff’s “And It’s Still Alright” tour. The livestream event will feature custom lighting that sets stage as a beautiful backdrop captured by roaming cameras\, drone footage and stark imagery of the empty venue. \n“This is our way of sharing the show with everyone around the world. We worked as hard as ever to put this show together and we don’t know when we will be able to get back out there\,” says Rateliff. “Whether you are on stage or in the audience Red Rocks is certainly the best place in the world to play. Our year has been strange and our future uncertain\, I think the only thing we can do is try to understand each other better and love each other. They are just waiting for you.” \nThe Marigold Project is Rateliff’s foundation dedicated to economic\, racial and social justice.
