After years of crafting dreamy, emotionally rich indie-pop, Tennis — the beloved husband-and-wife duo of Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley — has released their final studio album, Face Down in the Garden. Out now via their own Mutually Detrimental label, this seventh and final LP arrives as both a triumph and a farewell, closing the chapter on one of the most quietly influential acts in modern indie music
Face Down in the Garden: A Poetic Final Statement
Written and recorded in their home studio in Denver, Face Down in the Garden is a culmination of everything Tennis has become. The album returns to the couple’s roots — intimate, instinctive, and emotionally expansive — while still pushing the boundaries with unexpected arrangements and sonic choices that resist easy classification.
“Despite being rattled by a strange year,” Moore reflects, “it is our most confident album.” The record chronicles her inner world through vignettes — moments at sea, conversations at weddings, echoes of early tours — all set against a soundscape that spans Brill Building nostalgia, synth-pop shimmer, and guitar-driven rock. It’s as much a love letter to their own past as it is a graceful exit.
And what an exit it is. The lead single, “12 Blown Tires,” is a soul-baring meditation that distills 15 years of life and music into four stirring minutes. The song marked the first hint of an indefinite hiatus — a bittersweet announcement met with overwhelming love from their devoted fanbase.
“Patrick and I spent most of our 20s and all of our 30s focused on Tennis,” says Moore. “It has been the most joyous, bewildering, challenging, and humbling experience… It became clear that we had said everything we wanted to say.”
