ARTIST PROFILE | Annie Brown
Annie Brown is a singer and songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. She moved to Indianapolis in 2017 to pursue her love of music at Butler University’s jazz program under the direction of Dr. Matt Pivec. During her time at Butler, Annie was honored to learn from both local and national jazz legends while also enriching her love for classical music by studying vocal performance and operatic theater with Dr. Oliver Worthington. It was in college between music theory and jazz arranging classes that Annie discovered her love of songwriting which allowed her to combine her two passions: music and literature. “Withdrawals,” her first original song and first release, explores love through the lens of addiction and captures a dream-like aura through melancholic lyrics juxtaposed against nostalgic instrumentation.
Since graduating in 2021, Annie has released her first EP entitled “Criminal,” which lends a nuanced perspective to personal relationships and their impacts, whether positive, negative, or a bit of both. Describing her music as “sad girl rock,” Annie’s biggest musical inspirations include Lucy Dacus, SZA, Samia, Ethel Cain, and Indiana native Adrienne Lenker. She is currently working on a debut full length album entitled “Icarus,” a deeply personal and genre-bending exploration of identity and femininity in the midwest. Planning to move back to Chicago with her partner this summer to be closer to family, Annie sees her newest project as a letter to her younger self, written with love by the woman she became during her time in Indiana.
