SUMMARY:Tall Heights
DESCRIPTION:About Tall Heights \nTall Heights have relentlessly built a career from the ground up. Starting as buskers on the streets of Boston and now performing in packed venues across North America\, Europe\, and beyond\, the duo has distilled their sound in an organic and unselfconscious way. The unmistakable DNA of their music draws on many elements\, but the blend of their two distinct voices\, in both harmony and unison\, is what elevates it and separates it from the pack. \nHailing from the Boston area\, Paul Wright and Tim Harrington met each other in their hometown of Sturbridge through Tim’s older brother. The friendship blossomed in high school when they both took up the guitar and began working on music together. It didn’t take long for them to see the potential hidden in these casual jam sessions. As Paul recalls\, “Tim transformed from kid brother to musical collaborator over the course of a summer.” \nTall Heights is now set to release two highly-anticipated singles\, ‘Keeps Me Light’ and ‘Under Your Skin’\, both mixed by Grammy-nominated engineer Damien Lewis. Following on the success of their viral single ‘Spirit Cold’\, this new material captures a similar authentic and meaningful energy\, but also shows a side we have not yet seen of the pair. The self-produced project\, recorded in their simple home studio\, captures that raw moment between albums\, delivering some of their most honest and heartfelt work to date. Written and recorded in a reflective lull between hectic periods of touring\, the new tracks reaffirm Tall Heights’ commitment to a singular sound and an equally rare friendship. \nCombining Paul’s lifetime of classical training\, Harrington’s spontaneous artistic instincts\, and the prismatic union of their unique voices\, Tall Heights’ sonic imprint is in a category all its own. \nTall Heights’ recordings have amassed over 275 million streams. They regularly serve as Ben Folds’ backing band\, and have toured alongside CAKE\, Judah & the Lion\, Colony House\, and The Paper Kites. They’ve also performed on both Conan in 2016 and CBS Saturday Morning in 2018. ‘Under Your Skin’ and ‘Keeps Me Light’ are due for release fall 2019.

SUMMARY:Magic City Hippies
DESCRIPTION:About Magic City Hippies \nIf you’re playing in Miami\, you’ve got to get bodies moving. \nOver the years\, the city has been home to Latin pop royalty and ascendant Soundcloud rappers; played host to bass-booming EDM fests and the golden years of disco legends. It’s also why Miami’s latest genre-defying dynamos\, Magic City Hippies\, are primed to take their infectious indie-funk around the world. \n“We’re always out to entertain people\,” promises singer-guitarist Robby Hunter. “Miami is a nightlife city\,” he adds with a tinge of excitement. “People are oriented towards staying out all night. Anything you do has to make them dance.” \nAs Magic City Hippies approach the Aug. 16 release of their standout debut album Modern Animal — a mosaic of poolside grooves and lingering\, sun-kissed melodies — the trio’s origin story remains central to its crowd-pleasing mission statement. \nFirst it was just Hunter — hustling the Miami streets\, plugging his guitar and looping pedals into whatever power source he could find. Sometimes crowds formed; sometimes others joined in. On a good night\, he’d maybe earn a hundred bucks. The next stop was Barracuda Bar & Grill\, a popular Coconut Grove dive where Hunter became a regular performer and forged a sublime chemistry with the rest of Magic City Hippies’ present-day lineup: guitarist John Coughlin and drummer-producer Pat Howard. They began playing ‘90s rock and hip-hop covers to weekend warriors and college crowd regulars\, before live-testing their first original tracks in 2011. “There was something special when we played those sets\,” Howard remembers. “We’d go for four hours\, not even rehearsing. Then Robby came to the table with some originals.” \nThe easygoing psych-rap nugget “Corazon\,” released when they were still called Robby Hunter Band\, shot to No. 1 on the Hype Machine in 2013; after shifting to Magic City Hippies\, “Fanfare\,” the swaggering opening track off 2015’s Hippie Castle EP\, topped Spotify’s Global Viral 50 chart\, thanks to a burgeoning online fanbase. With brothers Ferny (keyboard) and Guillermo Belisario (bass) added to a now-indomitable live lineup\, Magic City Hippies embarked on extensive tours supporting bands like Hippo Campus and Moon Taxi. Crowds doubled and tripled\, confidence soared. Still unsigned and completely independent in their approach\, Magic City Hippies pushed distractions aside and worked tirelessly towards their first LP. \n“We’ve been touring for three years\,” Hunter says. “The album has a lot to do with the toll it’s taken on our relationships and lives.” No kidding: Robby was fired from a full-time job and ended a relationship of over eight years. Swirling single “SPF” comes to terms with a cheating partner through beams of Toro Y Moi-inspired Auto-Tune and bass licks. “What Would I Do” rides a catchy bossa hook towards the sonic equivalent of a Miami sunset. The sultry “Modern Animal” explores the liberation of open relationships through an irresistible Tame Impala rhythm and a safari of synthesizers. Clearly\, inspirations abound — Hunter occasionally raps a la Odelay-era Beck or Anthony Kedis when he’s addicted to the shindig — but their self-described “indie funk” sound remains uniquely their own. “People always say it’s hard to find another band we sound like\,” Howard says. “I’m proud of that — any song could be a single.” \nModern Animal is set to crown Magic City Hippies as one of streaming’s ascendant indie bands\, while taking their captivating live show to major festivals like Lollapalooza\, Bonnaroo\, and BottleRock\, alongside plenty of North American headline gigs through 2020.

SUMMARY:North Mississippi Allstars
DESCRIPTION:About North Mississippi Allstars \nA forgotten roll of film inspired a musical accompaniment\, the North Mississippi Allstars’ new record Up and Rolling. Shot before the turn of the century\, the photographs resonate with the music of four families from the Mississippi hills. The album captures the communal spirit upon which the band was founded. \nIn 1996\, a photographer from Texas\, Wyatt McSpadden\, traveled to North Mississippi looking to photograph local musicians. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson had grown up just south of Memphis and cut their teeth playing experimental rock & roll together\, as well as the roots repertoire pioneered by their father\, Jim Dickinson\, a legendary producer (Big Star\, the Replacements) and session player (Rolling Stones\, Bob Dylan). Their feet were firmly planted in the North Mississippi mud and music scene\, and they were excited to show Wyatt around their community\, to introduce him to the musical families of Otha Turner\, RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. \nTheir first stop was Otha Turner’s farm. Then in his late eighties\, he was the last living fife and drum musician in the hills — “and a friend to all\,” Luther exclaims. “He looked sharp that day\, still in his Sunday best and ready for a good time.” They all sat together on Otha’s fabled front porch\, which was something like a classroom for the elder Dickinson brother. The two would sit for hours\, the kid playing guitar while the old man made up lyrics on the spot. That’s how “Call That Gone” came into the world\, decades before the Allstars recorded it for Up and Rolling. \nAfter Otha treated Wyatt to an impromptu concert featuring his family band of drummers\, the fife player sent them down to Junior Kimbrough’s nightclub. They crossed the county line to see Junior and his Soul Blues Boys perform electrified\, multigenerational cotton patch blues in their own unique style. Later that evening RL Burnside showed up\, took the bandstand with beer in hand\, and proceeded to tear the house down. “Wyatt was so smooth nobody felt he was taking photos\,” Luther recalls. “No one was self-conscious or posing. Wyatt had a cloak of invisibility.” \nOnce the Peavey amps were turned off and the jukebox unplugged\, Cody and Luther parted ways with the Texan. Wyatt shared a handful of the images with Otha and the Dickinsons but no one saw the remaining photographs for decades. Wyatt’s images were forgotten. The Dickinsons had other matters demanding their attention — namely\, a new band they envisioned as a loose collective of local musicians who would play the community’s repertoire. \nA month after Wyatt took those photos\, the North Mississippi Allstars made their Memphis debut\, incorporating their father’s concept of roots music as a framework for improvisation and blending experimental/psychedelic excursions into Hill Country anthems. As Luther tells it\, “after NMA first shook em’ down in Memphis\, RL Burnside hired me to tour with him in ’97. A natural momentum began building up that slowly led to Cody and I hitting the road full-time. Our lives changed forever with the release of Shake Hands with Shorty in 2000. The music that rings thru the hills carried us away and became our home away from home as we began touring around the world. In orbit\, we lost track of time and of ourselves.” \nShake Hands with Shorty made the Allstars one of the most celebrated roots acts around. In 23 years they’ve released ten studio albums\, three of which were nominated for Blues Album of the Year Grammys. (Luther has notched another four nominations in various categories on top of that.) More important\, they’ve played countless shows in front of avid crowds\, touring alongside Robert Plant\, Patty Griffin\, Mavis Staples\, and John Hiatt\, among many others. Says Luther\, “I’m grateful to work together as a family — with Cody\, the musicians we roll with and the people who support our live shows. Together\, we keep this music up and rolling.” \nAll those years of touring took the Dickinson brothers far away from their North Mississippi home and the people who taught them this music. “The elders passed on in our absence — Junior\, Otha\, RL\, our father\,” Luther says. “Every time we returned home\, it was less recognizable.” In 2017 Wyatt tracked the brothers down and shared those photographs with them. “The images stopped me in my tracks and blew my mind. The music that changed our lives was captured in these photographs. Cody and I wanted to set the music free and record an album to accompany these photographs illustrating what Mississippi music sounded like in 1996 — and what it sounds like now. The fantasy of what music could have been on the radio that day in ’96 was the portal for the new original songs we recorded for this soundtrack. ‘Drunk Outdoors’\, ‘Up and Rolling’\, ‘Bump That Mother’\, and ‘Living Free’ sing about life in Mississippi\, be it our memory\, reality\, or dream for the future.” \nInspired by Wyatt’s images\, the Allstars returned home to their family recording studio\, the Zebra Ranch\, to make the record they heard in those photographs. “We trimmed back the wisteria\, emptied the traps\, and swept out the old barn. Firing up the tube amps and the old computers\, we began conjuring up modern Mississippi music\, ancient and futuristic.” \nAlong with originals\, they covered some of their favorite songs by these local heroes\, with help from Cedric Burnside and Sharde Thomas\, Otha’s granddaughter. “She was only a child when she became his apprentice and heir to the bamboo throne of fife and drum music\,” says Luther. “Now she’s the Queen of the Hill Country and my favorite singing partner.” In addition to duetting with him on RL’s raunchy “Peaches\,” she also sings with Luther on Otha’s “Call That Gone.” “She read over her grandfather’s lyrics and proceeded to nail it in one take. It was like she was singing from the collective soul of her family.” \nCedric Burnside\, RL’s grandson and two-time Grammy nominee\, is featured on two tracks.  “It’s an honor to play with Cedric. “Out on the Road” was a highlight of the RL tour we played together in ’97 and he sang his heart out on the new version.” \n“When we make a record\,” says Luther\, “we invite the people close to us at the time to join us.  Recording with the musicians we are touring with or hanging with help capture a record’s time frame.”  The great Mavis Staples takes them all to church on the old spiritual “What You Gonna Do?” Jason Isbell joins to record a tune that has been in the Dickinson family for years: “Our father recorded ‘Mean Old World’ with Duane Allman and Eric Clapton during the Layla sessions.  Jason invited me to record an acoustic\, slide guitar duo version. Cody came up with the new arrangement and wanted to record an electric version with Jason and Duane Betts\, using Mean Old World as a vehicle to lay down an epic statement about modern-day roots rock guitar.” \nAs Cody puts it\, “It’s all inclusive. Everyone is invited\, the bar is always open\, and drinks are on the house. But it’s important to us that we stay true to the vision of Hill Country music. There is incredible talent here in North Mississippi\, so I’m always learning. The best thing about being in this band this long is developing a sound and identity that is unique. That’s truly a blessing\, so we do our best to keep the music honest.” \nWhile inspired by the community and music of that Sunday more than 20 years ago\, Up and Rolling is the sound of modern Mississippi. Luther hopes\, “the music is rooted\, but spreads evasively from the kudzu jungle grown over Junior’s concrete slab and Otha’s porch boards thru the Zebra Ranch’s razor wire chain link fence.  Transcending time and space\, music reaches out into the dark of night like the wisteria vine\, looking for free-hearted souls to latch onto and wedge into the foundations of hate\, slowly tearing down walls a generation at a time.”

SUMMARY:Black Pumas (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:This event is currently sold out\, but we’ve partnered with Lyte to provide fans a safe and easy way to return or request tickets to the show. Find fan tickets here.  \n——————– \nSometimes\, a mystical\, life-changing connection can be closer than you think. \nIn 2017\, Grammy Award-winning guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada had recorded some instrumentals in his Austin studio\, and he started looking around for a vocalist — he knew a lot of singers\, but he wanted something different. He reached out to friends in Los Angeles\, in London\, but nothing seemed right. \nMeantime\, Eric Burton had recently made his way to Texas. Born in the San Fernando Valley\, he grew up in church and then got heavily involved in musical theater. He started busking at the Santa Monica pier\, where he brought in a few hundred dollars a day and developed his performance skills. Burton traveled through the Western states before deciding to settle down in Austin — setting up his busking spot on a downtown street corner\, at 6th Street and Congress\, for maximum exposure. \nA mutual friend mentioned Burton to Quesada\, saying that he was the best singer he had ever heard. The two musicians connected\, but Burton took a while to respond (“My friends were like ‘Dude\, you’re a mad man\, you need to hit that guy back!’“) Finally\, he called Quesada\, and started singing to one of the tracks over the phone. “I loved his energy\, his vibe\, and I knew it would be incredible on record\,” he says. “From the moment I heard him on the phone\, I was all about it.” \nThe results of that inauspicious beginning can now be heard on the self-titled debut album from Black Pumas\, the group that Quesada and Burton assembled\, which has become one of the year’s most anticipated projects. Described as “Wu-Tang Clan meets James Brown” by KCRW\, Black Pumas were the winner of Best New Band at the 2019 Austin Music Awards. \nQuesada and Burton both return\, over and over\, to this almost mystical connection they felt from the beginning. It’s this sense of common purpose\, of shared vision\, that gives Black Pumas its focus and power — and that points to great things ahead. \n“It’s so seamless\, it’s like we’re musical brothers to some degree\,” says Burton. “It feels so easy to meld together that what’s most important for us now is to continue to look for new sounds — to make sure we’re feeding ourselves the knowledge to continue to evolve. Every time we get together\, it’s better than the last time.”

SUMMARY:Tropidelic
DESCRIPTION:“Every single second is a blessing if you count them all\,” sings frontman Matthew Roads. You can hear the sincerity in his voice; the joie de vivre that oozes from everything Tropidelic does is apparent. When they take a stage\, their synergy flows member to member—horns blow\, knees kicked high and grins are passed from one man to the next. Almost immediately\, it spreads to the crowd\, lifting hands in the air as their feet begin to move. The pulse collectively becomes that of one. \nThe six-piece band from Cleveland\, Ohio may be far from any tropical islands\, but that doesn’t stop them from dishing out an interesting mix of reggae\, hip-hop and high energy funk for audiences across the country. Tropidelic has a deep and widespread appreciation for music that can be heard in each note. Some of the members are hip-hop heads\, while others are into metal\, funk or reggae. Each of these genres lends something to their collective sound. “We pride ourselves in being original in our musicality and personality as a band\,” says Roads\, “but also in not taking ourselves so seriously that it ruins the fun.” \nFor their 2017 release\, “Heavy is The Head”\, Tropidelic carefully vetted what songs made it to the record\, and featured songwriting efforts from multiple members. Sound engineer Cary Crichlow\, who has worked on the last four releases from the band\, returned to get the job done. “Our socio-political views vary as much as our musical tastes and always seep into the music” says Roads. “There’s certainly a lot that needs said\, but on this record we tried to be well-rounded and touch on a broad scope of emotions.” The release debuted at #1 on the iTunes reggae charts on November 10\, 2017. \nThese seasoned road dogs can be found spreading their soulful sound across the country in both intimate venues and music festivals\, having shared the stage with and supported such acts as 311\, Slightly Stoopid\, The Dirty Heads\, Pepper\, The Flobots and Wookiefoot. Previously\, Tropidelic has been featured at Electric Forest\, California Roots Music & Art Festival\, Reggae Rise Up and Warped Tour.

SUMMARY:Eilen Jewell
DESCRIPTION:About Eilen Jewell\nEilen Jewell laughs when told her label’s president called her a musicologist. But she confirms she and her husband and bandmate\, Jason Beek\, have a passion for studying American music.\n\n“We really love to uncover the past. It’s almost like digging for buried treasure\,” she says. “For me\, that’s where music is at. I like all kinds of music as long as there’s the word early in front of it.”\n\nFor her new album\, Down Hearted Blues\, on Signature Sounds\, they unearthed 12 vintage gems written or made famous by an array of artists both renowned and obscure\, from Willie Dixon and Memphis Minnie to Charles Sheffield and Betty James. Then\, like expert stonecutters\, they chiseled them into exciting new shapes and forms\, honoring history while breathing new life into each discovery.

SUMMARY:Foxing
DESCRIPTION:About Foxing \nConor Murphy – vocals // Ricky Sampson – guitar // Eric Hudson – guitar Josh Coll – bass // Jon Hellwig – drums\n\nThe members of Foxing will be the first to tell you that 2015 was a strange year for them. It started off normal enough: The rising quintet from St. Louis\, Missouri began the year with plans to write their follow up to 2013’s much loved debut T he Albatross ( Triple Crown Records)\, which bears much in common with inventive post-rock groups like Sigur Rós and Explosions In The Sky while still retaining an exciting\, emotional edge. It was at that point when things started to get murky.\n\n“I read a really scathing review of our album that was very\, very cutting\,” begins bassist Josh Coll\, one half of Foxing’s songwriting team alongside vocalist Conor Murphy. “The thing about that review was it spoke to me because everything that person was saying about our band were the things that I thought when I was feeling really low\, in a moment of weakness or depression. It sent me spiraling. I had this idea on tour\, like\, ‘Why don’t we get away? Not have any cellphones or internet.’”\n\nThe band made plans to decamp to a secluded cabin in northern Vermont in February to write what would become Dealer\, initially worried the sessions would result in failure. “We had just gotten done with the longest stretch of touring we had ever done\, and tensions were very high\,” Coll explains. “None of us have spent that long together in one particular place\,” Murphy elaborates. “On tour\, you can get away. With this\, we’re all in the same house all the time. It made us all grow a lot closer to each other in a lot of ways.”\n\nAfter having left the cabin with a batch of demos in hand and plans to record in Seattle with well respected producer Matt Bayles (Minus The Bear\, Mastodon) weeks later\, the band began doubting their work. “We had about six weeks before we went into the studio\, and we started re-working the songs. That was a huge challenge for us\,” Coll says. “When we went to Matt\, the only thing he had heard were the cabin demos\, and we came to him with these completely different songs\,” remembers Murphy. “There was a lot of Matt telling us\, ‘You guys have to remember why those songs were great in the first place\, and why you took so much time to record them when you were up there.’”\n\nThe end result\, Dealer\, is an incredible piece of art that feels honest and true\, emotionally resonant at its core and brutally honest in its lyrics. “On our last record\, we really worked in tandem on those lyrics\, editing each others’ stuff\, but there were times when we felt uncomfortable with this record lyrically a lot\,” Murphy admits.\n\n“At one point\, I told Josh what I wanted to write about\, and it was something really dark for me. And we matched each other with how dark we wanted to be and how vulnerable we wanted to be. It’s hard to edit someone’s lyrics when they’re talking about the darkest moment of their life.”\n\nWhile Murphy and Coll keep their lyrics vague enough to be open to interpretation\, it’s clear the duo are digging much deeper than your typical lover’s lament on tracks like the lush “The Magdalene\,” the chaotic storm of “Eiffel” and the fragile apology found in “Three On A Match\,” which finds Murphy repetitively pleading\, “I’m sorry.” Their bandmates match their lyrical intensity with equivalent musicianship\, and the result is a record that couldn’t have come into existence without the struggle and self doubt that came from both being in this band and just being a live.\n\n“We’re always in this weird looming feeling of ‘Everything’s falling apart\,’ or ‘Everything’s gonna fall apart\,’” says Coll. “Some people might say that’s good for the art\, but I don’t think it’s that great.” He laughs. “I think I could’ve written the same lyrics without that.”\n\n“We’re a band\, and someday we won’t be a band\,” Murphy says\, reciting Foxing’s unofficial motto. “Dealer felt like it was make or break. If we don’t do something that we can be proud of and other people can be proud of\, this is all for nothing and we might as well not be doing it.”

SUMMARY:Adam Hood
DESCRIPTION:THIS SHOW IS IN THE LO-FI LOUNGE ABOVE HI-FI! ENTER THROUGH THE BACK DOORS BEHIND RED LION AND GO UPSTAIRS TO SUITE 217! \nAbout Adam Hood \nSolo artist. Frontman. Behind-the-scenes songwriter. For more than a decade\, Adam Hood has left his mark both onstage and in the writing room\, carving out a southern sound that mixes equal parts country\, soul and American roots music. \nIt’s a sound that began shape in Opelika\, Alabama. Raised by working-class parents\, Hood started playing hometown shows as a 16 year-old\, landing a weekly residency at a local restaurant. He’d perform there every Friday and Saturday night\, filling his set list with songs by John Hiatt\, Hank Williams Jr\, and Vince Gill. As the years progressed\, the gigs continued — not only in his home state\, but across the entire country. Eventually even landing himself a three-year nationwide tour opening for Leon Russell. \nThese days\, though\, Hood is no longer just putting his own stamp on the songs of chart-topping country stars. Instead\, many of those acts — including Little Big Town\, Miranda Lambert\, Anderson East\, Josh Abbott Band\, Lee Ann Womack & Brent Cobb — are playing his songs. \nIn 2016\, Hood signed a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Nashville and GRAMMY Award-winning producer Dave Cobb’s Low Country Sound. All while remaining adamantly focused on his own career\, playing around 100 shows annually promoting third solo release\, Welcome to the Big World\, and now his newest release\, Somewhere in Between. \nA showcase for both his frontman abilities and songwriting chops\, Somewhere in Between shines a light on Hood’s strength as a live performer. He recorded most of the album live at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studios over two quick days. Teaming up with friend and producer Oran Thornton (Miranda Lambert’s Revolution\, Angaleena Presley’s Wrangled) their goal was to create something that reflected the raw\, real sound of his concerts\, where overdubs and unlimited takes are never an option. The result is a record that reflects Hood’s working-class roots\, mixing the upbeat thrill of his roadhouse roots-rock songs with the contemplative\, stripped-down sway of his country ballads. \nJoining him in the studio were guitarist Pat McLaughlin\, bassist Lex Price\, and drummer Jerry Roe. All of whom captured their parts in just a handful of live takes while Hood simultaneously tracked his vocals. Stripped free of studio trickery and lushly layered arrangements\, Somewhere in Between is an honest\, story-driven record. One that’s both relatable and deeply autobiographical\, with Hood writing or co-writing ten of the record’s eleven tracks\, alongside friends like McLaughlin\, Brent Cobb — who also appears on the electrified “She Don’t Love Me” — Josh Abbott\, Jason Eady\, and plenty of others. \nSomewhere in Between is an album that finally finds Hood telling his own story. A dedicated family man\, he wrote “Locomotive” — a heartland anthem\, full of Telecaster twang and sunny swagger — after watching his young daughter develop her motor skills while playing with a set of blocks. Balancing his life as a relentless road-warrior\, Hood penned highway ballad “Downturn” about a life filled with wanderlust and long drives from gig to gig. \nAs a blue-collar songwriter\, Hood shines a light on everyday experiences — from family and friends to the thrill of Friday nights. Partly because he’s stuck to his roots. The native Alabaman still lives in the Yellowhammer State and celebrates America’s rural pockets with songs like “Keeping Me Here” and “Real Small Town\,” two songs filled with images of main streets\, open landscapes\, hard times\, and good people. \n“It’s southern music\,” he says\, grouping Somewhere in Between’s wide range of music under an appropriate banner. “That’s what it represents: the soulful side of southern music\, the country side of southern music\, the genuineness of southern culture\, and the way I grew up. One of the t-shirts I sell at every show simply says ‘Southern Songs\,’ and It’s a good summary of what I do. It’s what I’ve always done.”
