SUMMARY:All Them Witches
DESCRIPTION:About All Them Witches\nBy most fifth LPs\, the band’s sound is pretty set. Parameters established. Refinement dissipated. You get a to-formula execution of what’s worked in the past. Fair enough. All Them Witches go a harder route.\nIn 2017\, the Nashville four-piece offered what might’ve otherwise become their own template in their fourth album (second for New West)\, Sleeping Through the War. It brought a larger production value thanks to oversight from producer Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell\, Shooter Jennings\, etc.)\, found them using choral vocals\, expanded arrangements\, bigger sounds than anything they’d done before.\nThey could’ve easily fallen into a pattern of watered-down clones of that record. Easily.\nSo naturally in a year they’ve thrown it all to the Appalachian wind\, turned the process completely on its head and gone the other way: recording in a cabin in Kingston Springs\, about 20 miles outside of Nashville on I-40\, with guitarist Ben McLeod at the helm. Self-produced. Take that\, expectation.\nThe result\, mixed by Rob Schnapf (Beck\, Elliott Smith\, Kurt Vile)\, is the most intimate\, human-sounding album All Them Witches have recorded and another redefinition of who they are as a band. Introducing keyboardist/percussionist Jonathan Draper to the fold with McLeod\, bassist/vocalist Charles Michael Parks\, Jr.\, and drummer/graphic artist Robby Staebler\, All Them Witches’ ATW isn’t self-titled by mistake.\nIt’s the band confirming and continuing to develop their approach\, in the devil’s boogie of “Fishbelly 86 Onions\,” the organ-laced groove and masterful flow of “Half-Tongue\,” the build of “HJTC” and the fluid jam in closer “Rob’s Dream.” You can hear it in the mellow patience of that last track\, never lost but always wandering\, and in “1st vs. 2nd\,” where they turn from a frenetic shake to some purposefully metal-ish riffing while still holding onto gut-tightening tension.\nAnd what do they do with that? Some overblown payoff? Hell no. They cut it short\, drift into noise and then dig into “Half-Tongue” ahead of the moodier “Diamond\,” which\, true to its name\, seems to turn any light that touches it into a prism. This is a band who delight in the exploration\, in finding new rules to break\, and in continually learning new ways to do so.\nATW is a reaction to being a “bigger” act. To playing bigger shows\, bigger tours\, etc. From the sustained consonants in Parks’ vocals\, to the sleek basslines that play off the can’t-sit-still-won’t-sit-still swing in Staebler’s drums\, to McLeod’s commanding slide in “Workhorse” and drifting melancholy at the outset of “Harvest Feast\,” ATW is their laying claim to the essential facets of their identity.\nAnd most crucial to that identity is its shifting nature. All Them Witches didn’t get to this point by resting on laurels\, and if anything\, the urgency of these tracks – fast pushers and sleepy jams alike – is among their greatest strengths.\nIt’s a rawer delivery\, as stage-ready as the band itself\, and it captures All Them Witches in this moment. Is ATW who they’ll be tomorrow? Who the hell knows? Check back in and we’ll find out together. That’s the whole idea.

SUMMARY:Laura Jane Grace and the Devouring Mothers
DESCRIPTION:About Laura Jane Grace and the Devouring Mothers \n\nLaura Jane Grace is a major figure in today’s rock scene and the lead singer of the band Against Me!\, which she founded in Naples\, FL in the late 1990s. She has made one solo album and seven albums with Against Me! Grace went public with her gender transition in 2012\, a story she has shared with NPR\, Rolling Stone\, SPIN\, Cosmopolitan\, ELLE and numerous other outlets. In her latest music\, she continues to detail her journey all while staying true to her earlier themes of outspoken political critique\, environmentalism and personal and social liberation\, with a base in American music\, including country and folk-rock\, and a penchant for noise and anarchy. \n2014 was a monumental year for Grace\, a year that she served as Music Director for MTV‘s Rebel Music\, a series of documentary films about youth\, music and global social change\, focused on youth protest movements in the most challenging and turbulent parts of the world. Additionally\, along with AOL Studios\, she released her 10-episode docu-series titled True Trans With Laura Jane Grace\, a body of work that went on to be nominated for a News & Documentary Emmy Award in the New Approaches: Arts\, Lifestyle\, Culture category. Grace would round out her year by being honored as part of OUT Magazine‘s annual “OUT 100” in December 2014. \n2015 saw the release of Against Me!’s 23 Live Sex Acts\, a collection of new\, live tracks and fan favorites that would be issued on the band’s own label\, Total Treble. Released on Friday\, September 4\, 23 Live Sex Acts stands as an immersive compilation of songs that span the band’s entire catalog and provides the most comprehensive look into the powerful Against Me! live experience. Throughout the year as well\, the singer would also become a contributing writer to Noisey where she helmed an advice column titled Mandatory Happiness\, and\, alongside the legendary Joan Jett\, loaned her support for Miley Cyrus’ “Happy Hippie Foundation\,” a non-profit whose mission is to rally young people to fight injustice facing homeless youth\, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations. \nOn September 16\, 2016\, Against Me! released its critically-acclaimed seventh studio album titled Shape Shift With Me\, a record that has the distinction of the first album Grace has written truly from the heart\, with no metaphorical cloaks cast over the lyrics. It’s an album about love\, that deceptively complex emotion we all struggle with yet has somehow eluded most of Grace’s songwriting for the past 20 years. \nShortly after the release of Shape Shift With Me\, Grace released her highly anticipated memoir titled TRANNY: Confessions Of Punk Rock’s Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout. Written with Dan Ozzi\, TRANNY\, one of Billboard‘s “100 Greatest Music Books Of All Time” and a memoir Harper’s BAZAAR says “establishes Grace as at once a transgender icon and modern day literary heroine\,” is now available through Hachette Books. \n2017 will see Laura Jane Grace and her band opening the entirety of Green Day’s upcoming “Revolution Radio” arena tour of North America that will span the month of March.
